There’s plenty of local fun to be had this Memorial Day weekend – bike and picnic friendly Governors Island opens today, NYC beaches open tomorrow, and there are street festivals and fairs in the neighborhood all weekend long. A round up:
- The 16th Annual Lower East Side Festival of the Arts (First Avenue between 9th and 10th St.) kicks off this evening at the Theater for the New City. Performances and street festivities continue all day tomorrow and Sunday.
- The Hester Street Fair (Hester St. at Essex) continues it’s Saturday run of great food, hand-crafted goods and vintage offerings. This week the Japanese Folk Dance Institute will be manning an Aid Japan booth that will be selling beautiful Japanese goods with 100% of the proceeds going to relief efforts in Northern Japan.
- The Loisaida Festival returns to Avenue C (Louisaida Ave., between 12th and 6th St.) on Sunday from 11a-6p. The festival is a celebration of Latino heritage and culture, incorporating live music, dance, food and outreach programs from neighborhood organizations.
