Paladino Calls Silver a Criminal; Silver Responds

Must Read

This morning, GOP gubernatorial nominee Carl Paladino called State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver a criminal for blocking legislation that would hurt his law firm, Weitz & Luxenberg.  Via the New York Post:

This guy’s been dictating to the state of New York… He’s kept his thumb on tort reform, comp reform, insurance reform, malpractice reform since 1996. He won’t let the bill go to the floor of Legislature. He’s kept his finger on that… The man is a criminal, OK? He did it and in the meantime he’s taking outside income from Weitz & Luxenberg. He’s never reported it. I just read it again last night. I was looking at his disclosure sheets, OK. They say absolutely nothing about how much his income is and how he earns it. And we know… I mean, you can just look at it and you can smell there’s something wrong when he lets New Yorkers suffer the highest insurance rates in the country, all right. Also he can get his million dollars or what the heck ever he takes from Weitz & Luxenberg. The man is a criminal, and don’t try to make him look like anything else.”

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic nominee for governor, responded, saying Paladino should come forward with evidence before making a “serious accusation” or he shouldn’t make the accusation in the first place. And this afternoon Silver is out with the following statement:

It is unfortunate that New Yorkers are being forced to endure the insulting and baseless hectoring of the Republican candidate for governor. I will not get into the gutter with Mr. Paladino, nor dignify his comments with a response.  Rather, I will let New Yorkers judge his fitness for public office.
