Good Morning: Explosives at Least 13 Years Old, Shuang Wen Threats, Xiao Ye Panned by the Times

Must Read

Sunny and 65 degrees today.  The showers return late tomorrow and into Friday.

In the news this morning, investigators are learning more about the C4 explosives found in the Marble Cemetery over the weekend. They have concluded the eight sticks of C4 are most likely at least 13 years old, since they lack identifying markers manufacturers were required to include on the “putty like compound” beginning in 1997. The Times reports the explosives have been: “positively identified as M112 bricks manufactured exclusively for the military, meaning that the cache was most likely stolen from a military base at some point.”

NY1 continues its investigation of Shuang Wen, the high performing LES dual language school. Part 2 of Lindsey Christ’s report alleges: “…tensions have been rising at the Shuang Wen School. A lot has to do with money. The school demands that students pay a thousand dollars for mandatory Mandarin classes. But there are also charges of preferential treatment for admission and inflated attendance figures.”  NY1 also says the principal has received threatening letters — leading some parents to fear for the safety of their children.

Other items of interest today: Bowery Boogie has details about an accident involving a truck and a bicyclist at Bowery and Delancey. It looks like the troubled East Village bar, Sin Sin, is closing, at least temporarily. EV Grieve reports Celebrate Cafe (run by the LES Girls Club) is moving from the Bowery Poetry Club to 136 Avenue C.

In the New York Times, Sam Sifton likes a few dishes he sampled at Eddie Huang’s new restaurant, Xiao Ye, but basically he says, the place is a bummer.  He calls the Orchard Street venture “an artful misfire: the sort of place that, as Mr. Huang sadly appears to desire it to be, is really only best when the customers are a little drunk, a little high, maybe both and in any event extremely hungry.”

Lots of community meetings tonight – the 7th Precinct Community Council, CB3’s transportation committee, the District 1 Community Education Council. You can find details on our Calendar.
