We’ve been telling you about this weekend’s big event in Luther Gulick Park. “Take Back My Park Day” will be full of fun interactive events, all designed to build momentum for the rehabilitation of one of New York’s most neglected public spaces. But while organizers are very much focused on park’s future, they also want to be mindful of the past.

When the park opened in the 1930’s it quickly became an integral part of neighborhood life. Many longtime residents have stories to tell about the good ol’ days on the basketball court or in the seating area on the park’s west end. On Sunday, people will be able to share their memories with interviewers assembling an oral history. There are, of course, many other “visioning activities” planned. You can see details here.

“Take Back My Park Day”  will be held from 1-5pm Sunday in Luther Gulick Park (Delancey and Willett Streets).  It’s a great opportunity to take part in a community-driven effort to transform part of our neighborhood.  It’s not all seriousness, though! Don’t forget that outdoor ping pong table! Visit Kickstarter to see how you can lend your support to ping pong in the park.
