This just in from State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s office regarding the 7-alarm fire at 285 Grand Street last night:
Today’s devastating fire on Grand Street has displaced more than sixty families and injured several of the building’s inhabitants and firefighters responding to the scene. I want to thank the firefighters, police, EMTs, and members of our community who so ably responded overnight and into this morning. Their swift response and extraordinary courage contained the fire and prevented it from causing any loss of life.
I have been in touch with the leaders of the Red Cross to offer my support as they assist families in need of shelter, and my staff is on the scene and will work to ensure that residents have up to date information. Going forward, we will work with the displaced residents to help secure housing in our community.
