Education Council Discusses Dual Language Programs Tonight

Must Read

There will be presentations from two Lower East Side schools developing dual language programs at District 1’s Education Council meeting tonight.

The Shuang Wen School (P.S. 184) is sought after by parents citywide for its dual language curriculum.  Back in January, we reported the Department of Education had determined the school did not meet city, state and federal requirements for official “dual language” status. Since sometime last year the DOE and the school have been working to implement new academic programs and admissions policies to bring the school into compliance.

The Anna Silver School (P.S. 20) is starting a new dual language program.  Some parents, including, P.S. 20 PTA President Monica Harris have concerns about the proposal. She fears the program could attract a large number of children from outside District 1, creating new demands for scarce classroom space and potentially “gentrifying” a school serving a diverse neighborhood.

This evening, the Education Council will hear from both schools. The meeting takes place at 6pm, in the Bard High School Cafeteria, 135 Mangin Street. Child care is available.
