This Weekend’s DID Street Fair

Must Read

Sean Sweeney of Downtown Independent Democrats sent us the above photo and a write-up from this weekend’s “DID Street Fair:”

Although residents and businesses bemoan street fairs as generic events purveying fried sausage or six-packs of tube socks, this year’s  Downtown Independent Democrats’ (DID) Annual Street Fair belied that notion.

Because DID’s Street Fair traditionally has been the first street fair of the year in New York City, the event has become a welcomed harbinger of spring for downtowners. This year the fair was held Friday, April 23, a balmy and sunny spring day, on Maiden Lane and Water Streets in the Financial District.

Not only was ethnic food in abundance to sate the appetite of lunchtime office workers, poltics and social activism also were on the menu.

DID members Jean Grillo, Jeanne Wilcke, Diane Stein, Jeff Kurzon and Victoria Lau distributed over 400 flyers explaining President Obama’s Health Care Reform to both residents and workers from the neighborhood.

Doctors and staff from Downtown Hospital explained the legislation, answered questions about the hospital and outlined details of the impact of St. Vincent’s closing.

Additionally, several new voters were registered and fifty Census forms were distributed to those who “lost” theirs.
