Edmund J. Bergassi, NYS Chairman of Toys for Tots; Nancy Ortiz, President of the Vladeck Houses Tenants Association; Major Chuck Kilbride of the U.S. Marine Corps; Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney; and Sergeant Gomez of the USMC help distribute Toys for Tots at Vladeck Houses.

Just before the holiday, Rep. Carolyn Maloney was on the Lower East Side to help the Marines distribute “Toys for Tots.”  At the Seward Park Community Center on Essex Street, she was joined by Carmen Orta, tenant association president of the Seward Park Extension Houses, and at the Vladeck Houses by Nancy Ortiz, tenants association president of that development.

Major Chuck Kilbride announced that Congresswoman Maloney’s late husband, Clifton Maloney, had been named an honorary vice chairman of the Toys for Tots program in New York City.  “I am touched that Toys for Tots is making my husband an Honorary Vice Chairman,” Maloney said.  “Clif was a Navy veteran and I know that he would be honored that fellow members of the military are recognizing his service.”

The USMC’s “Toys for Tots” programs collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December, and distributes them as Christmas gifts to needy children in communities throughout the United States.  Every year, Maloney and her staff help distribute the toys to underprivileged children throughout New York’s 14th Congressional District, which includes much of the LES.
