Choreographer Jody Oberfelder loves to stretch the boundaries of physicality in her work, often combining an array of highly athletic and expressive choreography with ample doses of humor and humanity. Her latest piece, THROB, comes to the Abrons Arts Center this weekend. The piece is inspired by the biological workings of the heart, and grew out of conversations with cardiologist Dr. Holly Andersen about the science of “our most fundamental organ.”
THROB is set to original music by composer Andy Akiho, which will be played live, amplified with auditory tracking of the heart rates and fluctuations produced by the dancers. The program also features the premiere of Sung Heroes — a quartet that places each dancer in a cinematic lens — with music by The Section Quartet, and Oberfelder herself, performing the solo Re: Dress.
On Thursday, March 1, Jody Oberfelder Dance Projects will hold an Opening Night Gala and Champagne Reception.
