Mayor de Blasio on Thursday handed out awards to “Hometown Heroes in Education” and visited the Emergency Management warehouse in Brooklyn where hurricane supplies for Puerto Rico are being organized. But he also managed to fit in a quick lunch at the Essex Street Market. You gotta eat, right?

Hizzoner stopped by the historic Lower East Side market for a sandwich at Saxelby’s Cheesemongers. Our spies tell us he had the classic grilled cheese, and finished lunch off with a cupcake from a new vendor, I.M. Pastry Studio. In the photo above, you see de Blasio with an Essex Market customer and Xiomara Martinez, an employee of Pain D’Avignon Bakery.

The market has been showered with attention from city officials lately. Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen went on a tour lately, and also visited the new Essex Street Market facility, which will be opening next fall as part of the Essex Crossing project. The mayor may be making a habit of lunch on the Lower East Side. He was at Katz’s Deli this past month for a meeting of the minds with City Council candidates who may very well help decide who’s going to be the next City Council speaker.
