City Lore has added a special screening to their current exhibition Boardwalk Renaissance: How the Arts Saved Coney Island. On Thursday, April 28, they will screen Famous Nathan, a home-movie-style documentary that chronicles the personal and public history of the beloved hot dog eatery, Nathan’s Famous of Coney Island. The New York Times reviewed it here last summer.
Directed by Lloyd Handwerker (the grandson of the original Nathan) the film took 30 years to make. It combines archival film and family home movies with interviews with family, friends and longtime Nathan’s staff members, not to mention a Coney Island-inspired score and audio from Nathan recounting his immigrant experience. The screening is followed by a Q and A with Handwerker.
