Here’s an inviting thought as we suffer through an early summer heat wave. Ice cream is coming to the Essex Street Market!
You may have seen Luca & Bosco at the LES Film Festival or at the New Amsterdam Market. In the next few weeks, they’ll be establishing a permanent outpost right inside the market’s north end-entrance, near the communal tables. Catherine Oddenino and Ruthie Vishlitzky co-founded the company, and have been operating out of La Marqueta’s production facilities in East Harlem.
Luca & Bosco specializes in making all-natural ice cream, with organic ingredients when possible, and interesting flavor combinations. Pictured at the top of this post, you see their banana ice cream with candied bacon and butterscotch diablo. Other flavors include: goat cheese, rosemary olive oil, lemon cheesecake and grapefruit and gin sorbet. There’s also classic vanilla if you’re not the adventuresome type.
Catherine tells us their Essex market booth will be more like a “tricked out cart.” There’s not much build-out to speak of, but it’ll probably take at least a couple of weeks to get inspections and permits approved. Luca and Bosco’s lease begins July 1. Catherine said she and Ruthie are excited to be part of the Essex Street Market, since they’ve always loved spending time there and their big fans of the existing vendors.
Where did they come up with the name for the business? Turns out Luca is the name of Catherine’s three-year old white Maltese. Bosco is Ruthie’s chocolate Lab.
