We’re still in the dead of winter but it’s never too early to start thinking about spring. Jeremy Sherber of the Grand Street CSA let us know they’ve just opened up 2011 registration to the general public. If you’d like to know more about Community Supported Agriculture and about the options (vegetables, fruit, eggs, cheese, etc) available, head on over to the Grand Street CSA’s web site. But if you’re interested, it’s best to hurry (there are only a few available slots).

CB3's David McWater was at the center of this week's contentious meeting.
if there’s one thing you can say about members of Community Board 3, they’re passionate about the Lower East Side. So its not very surprising when, from time to time, discussions about various issues become a little heated. But earlier this week, a meeting to finish hashing out new policies for evaluating liquor licenses became unusually contentious. The back and forth among board members turned highly personal, tense and ugly — before the proposals were finally approved, unanimously.
For the past several months, CB3 has been trying to figure out how to address a perception that the recommendations of the “SLA Committee” are often inconsistent and arbitrary — and that marathon meetings frequently stretching well past midnight are counter-productive and overly burdensome on everyone involved. Imperial Tavern: still closed.
In Lower East Side food news:
- Fork in the Road notes that Imperial Tavern has not reopened, in spite of a sign in the window suggesting the new Ludlow Street party spot would resume operations February 14th.
- Bowery Boogie reports Stellina, the bakery/gelato emporium next to Sorella, will be opening soon.
- Serious Eats proclaims “Tasty Dumplings” on Mulberry Street the tastiest dumplings in Chinatown.

Although it’s not exactly a holiday weekend for everyone, President’s Day (Mon., Feb. 21st) is as good an excuse as any to catch an extra night of the midnight movie at the Sunshine. Especially when they are screening Steven Spielberg’s innovative CG classic, Jurassic Park (1993). What’s more fun than a bag of popcorn and giant prehistoric creatures (on the big screen) wreaking havoc on the likes of Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum? $10 // Feb. 18-20 // Midnight // 143 E. Houston Street.
The ASPCA's mobile medical unit was booked full on Madison Street on Feb. 12; it comes back to the neighborhood on Saturday as part of the I Love NYC Pets event at Sara D. Roosevelt Park.

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side this weekend:
 Aunt Martha
AUNT MARTHA – Fri., Feb 18 І 10:30PM at The Livingroom
Aunt Martha are in the middle of a busy 3-month tour, stretching from New England to California, and as far south as Tennessee. The trio from Wilmot, NH are travelling the highways with a van (though I’m imagining it as a rumbling 1970’s station wagon on 3 tires and a donut) full of earth n’ wood folk-rock songs that are nicely anchored in melody and lyrics. They’re not “traditional,” though they adhere to the time-tested tradition that — if the songs are good –everything else will take care of itself. The drums are steady, the strings and harmonies are textural, and the vocals tell a story, and they manage all of those things with plenty of skill and sincerity. Lower East Side rapper “Tru Life” has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the fatal stabbing of a man outside a Manhattan apartment complex almost two years ago. The former Jay-Z protege, who’s real name is Roberto Rosado, and his brother accepted a plea deal in connection with second-degree murder, gang assault and assault charges.
Prosecutors said 20-year old Christopher Guerrero was killed at the end of a violent evening in June of 2009. The trouble began hours earlier in a Midtown night club after alleged LES drug dealer Michael Slater was shot in the stomach.
The ordeal shook up residents of the housing developments along Avenues C and D, where escalating violence was considered then (and still is now) a growing concern.
Rosado’s brother, Marcus, was sentenced to 12 years. Under the terms of the deal, neither man can appeal.

All this talk about underground fighting has led to a fundraiser for the documentary, Model Boxers, that is being made about one “pretty boy” boxer in particular – Rockstar Charlie. Charlie and his friends/posse, the Big Gunz, will be hosting a big event (see above) this Saturday at Santos Party House to help raise funds for the movie. Live 365 Presents will curate a good time for all – lots of live music and the filmmakers will be on hand. All proceeds will benefit the film. $12 // 9pm // 96 Lafayette Street.

Talk about hyperlocal heaven! The city’s 311 web site now features a searchable map which allows users to see the type and number of complaints coming in from specific locations throughout Manhattan. You can search by address, intersection, community district or City Council district. 311 calls are represented by yellow circles, which become larger as more complaints are registered.
In the screen grab pictured above, we selected the intersection of Rivington and Ludlow streets, a neighborhood hot spot. Continue reading How to Find 311 Complaints Near You

Claudette Rivera. Photo credit: Frances Ayers.
A few days ago, Lower East Side resident Frances Ayers left a comment on news coverage of the January 7th fire that killed her longtime neighbor, 72-year-old Claudette Rivera. Ayers suffered second degree burns when she attempted to rescue Rivera from her second floor apartment at 124 Ludlow.
A Fire Department investigation found Rivera’s clothing caught on fire, after she turned on the two front burners of her stove to keep warm. In our roundup of fire reporting, we noted that residents disagreed about whether there was heat in the building when the fire broke out that morning. In Ayers’ remarks, she wrote “I know for a fact that there was no heat beginning 11pm the night before.” Continue reading Follow-up: Fatal Fire at 124 Ludlow
