Fire Displaces Residents at 143 Essex

A fire broke out tonight at 143 Essex Street, a 5 story building located between Rivington and Stanton. Firefighters, paramedics and police responded in force. Multiple firetrucks stretched from Houston, past Stanton, spilling on to the side streets. About a dozen residents of the building stood watching the scene from across the street. Emergency crews were handing out blankets and food. One of the residents said she was in the building when the fire broke out. She said it didn’t appear anyone was injured. 143 Essex was built in 1920. It has 18 apartments, as well as ground floor retail space (including Essex Dental and the Wing-on Trading Company).

Nuestra Bodega Hopes to Pick Up Where La Bodega de la Familia Left Off

Santiago with Councilmember Rosie Mendez

Tina Santiago knows a thing or two about the culture of drug abuse on the Lower East Side. As program director for La Familia de la Bodega, she saw first-hand how families are torn apart – and then put back together again.  It was a big blow for the neighborhood, when the innovative drug treatment program shut down two years ago.  But Santiago is convinced the need has only grown since then – so she recently announced the creation of “Nuestra Bodega,” which she calls the La Bodega de la Familia’s “birth child.” And this weekend, she’s holding her first fundraiser.

LES Gallery Openings This Week

Irish artist Brian Ormond‘s solo show “10001″ will open at the Collective Hardware Gallery (169 Bowery) tonight from 7-9PM. Ormond writes about this work: “The depths and movements within my paintings are the vital ingredient for me. There has to be movement. There has to be energy. Turning the beat up loud, my work begins to take on a rhythmic quality. Dancing to the sounds. Listening to the silence. Thinking. Clearing the head. Switching off. But never waiting. Always moving…”

Silver Contradicts Governor’s Claims, Nightlife Town Hall, Moonstruck Diner Closed

The Daily News: “Silver contradicts Paterson’s claims he played no favorites in picking AEG to run shots at Aqueduct.”

Meanwhile, Silver doesn’t think much of the governor’s budget projections.

Remember tonight’s Nightlife Town Hall!

The State Senate’s Environmental Conservation Committee passes Sen. Daniel Squadron’s proposal that calls for auto dealers to display how many gallons of gas each new vehicle uses to travel 1,000 miles.

EV Grieve reports the Moonstruck Diner on 5th Street is closed.

P.S. 110 Parents Invite Whole Community - and President Obama - to Pajama Pancake Breakfast

A raffle was held at the first pancake breakfast in October.

If you serve pancakes, they will come! That was the lesson last fall when the parents of P.S. 110 held their first Pajama Pancake Breakfast for the community.  They invited Barack Obama, the mayor and many other VIP’s. While the President couldn’t make it, 300 people from the neighborhood did, making the event a big success. They’re doing it again on Saturday morning – and once again – they’d like to invite everyone to stop by (local elected officials are welcome – hint hint).

Opponents of Downtown Terror Trial Not Letting Up

Community activist Jan Lee

The grassroots organization fighting to get the 9/11 terror trial moved from Lower Manhattan is not taking any chances. They’re cautiously optimistic that the Justice Department will find another location, but given the conflicting signals from the Administration in the past week, they’re keeping up the pressure.

According to Jan Lee of the Civic Center Residents Coalition, the “rallies and protests will be escalating” until there’s an official announcement from the Justice Department. The group is planning a press conference tomorrow at 12:30pm, in Columbus Park (on Worth Street right across from the federal courthouse where the trial would be held).
