Bicyclist Killed on Delancey Street

A woman riding a bicycle was struck by a school bus and died from her injuries on the Lower East Side Tuesday.

Young Israel Building Finally Coming Down

Two-and-a-half years after the Young Israel Synagogue moved out of its building on East Broadway, demolition work has finally begun. They sold the building to a developer, who planned a new condo project. In exchange, the synagogue received several million dollars and a promise of a new sanctuary, a gym and classrooms as part of the new building.

Educational Alliance Art School Open House Thursday

On Thursday evening, the Educational Alliance's art school will be hosting an open house. It will be a chance to learn about adult courses and meet teachers before winter classes begin later this month. You'll be able to tour the studios and see 10-minute demonstrations in welding, portrait drawing, pottery wheel throwing and stone carving. Free gifts will be given out throughout the evening – donated from
local art shops including Pearl Paint and Utrecht Art Supplies.

Chinatown YMCA’s High Hopes for Two Bridges Community Center

Pic_Kaplan Ask anyone who works for Dave Kaplan at the Chinatown YMCA. They'll tell you he's got big ideas. Right now, one of those ideas is beginning to take shape inside the Two Bridges Community Center, which the YMCA has been running for nearly a year.

Kaplan is executive director of the Chinatown YMCA, based in the Houston Street Center (at Houston and the Bowery).
