Congee Village

The best congee (26 varieties) in New York City can be found at this large restaurant on Allen Street, and its sister outpost on the Bowery. But there’s a huge menu (250 items long) featuring a wide variety of Cantonese and Hong Kong specialties. The crispy garlic chicken is legendary. Other favorites include: razor clams in a salty black bean sauce, sweet potato greens, roast duck with meatballs and chicken with black mushrooms. There are four party rooms downstairs, each featuring  a multi-lingual karaoke machine!

Gentleman Farmer

This sliver of a restaurant just a stone’s throw from Sara D. Roosevelt Park offers rustic farmhouse french dishes with “New American” touches. Chef/owner Karim Nounouh emphasizes quality, locally sourced ingredients.  The space is cozy and charming. There are copper pots on the walls, a curved wood plank ceiling.  Service is efficient and friendly.  Flavor combinations are sometimes successful — sometimes not. Entrees range from $16-28.

Donnybrook

A nicely appointed but low key Irish bar on Clinton Street that caters mostly to a neighborhood crowd. A good place to down a pint of Guinness and watch a football game.
