An enormous crowd gathered on the Lower East Side Sunday morning to mourn a major figure in the worldwide Jewish community, Rabbi Dovid Feinstein.

The funeral is taking place at Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem (MTJ), the yeshiva on East Broadway. As The Jerusalem Post noted, he has led the yeshiva since 1986, following the death of his father, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. Rabbi Feinstein was an internationally known Torah scholar and halachic authority.

The Orthodox Union released a statement that read, in part, “The world has lost a gadol beTorah [giant of Torah]. We will miss his Torah leadership, his astounding and deeply insightful wisdom, as well as his warmth and accessibility.”

Rabbi Feinstein was 91.
