Before you know it, fresh summer fruits and vegetables will be making an appearance at local greenmarkets. If you want to get your warm weather produce direct from a regional farm and help sustain independent farmers in the area, joining a CSA is the way to go. “CSA” stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and it just so happens we have two organizations on the Lower East Side devoted to the concept.

The Grand Street CSA, now in its 11th year, recently opened up registration for the 2019 season. Bi-weekly distribution takes place at the Abrons Arts Center starting June 4. This year, the Grand Street CSA is partnering with a new farm, Mountain View Farm in Easthampton, Massachusetts. The registration deadline is May 15.  More info here.

Your second option is the Stanton Street CSA, which has been around since 2005 and is based at the M’Finda Kalunga Garden in Sara D. Roosevelt Park. Weekly distribution begins June 6 from Windflower Farm in the Hudson Valley. More information and a signup form can be found here.
