A man was shot during an incident with police this morning near Cherry and Pike streets. He’s hospitalized in critical condition.

It happened around 7 a.m. No police were injured during the confrontation. The victim was rushed to Bellevue Hospital.

According to Channel 4, cops responded to a residential building. The man allegedly “jumped out toward police” with a knife in his hand. NY1 reported that the NYPD had been called to the scene due to, “an order of protection violation.” The 7th Precinct advised people to avoid the area due to the ongoing police investigation.

UPDATE: The man, 32, later died of his injuries. Cops had initially responded to a domestic dispute at 227 Cherry St., the affordable complex Extell Development recently opened alongside the luxury mega-tower One Manhattan Square.  A 911 caller had reported that his partner had barricaded him in a bathroom in an 8th floor apartment.  NYPD Chief Terence Monahan discussed the incident on Friday. Here’s more from Channel 4:

“The individual at this time was calm and compliant and the officers began to escort him toward the hallway,” Monahan said. “Suddenly the individual broke away from the officers, grabbed a large knife from the kitchen area and ran toward the 911 caller.”  The suspect, identified as Joshua Rember Williams, began stabbing the 911 caller with the butcher knife, at which point officers shot him in the torso, Monahan said. The officers immediately began to render aid, calling for an ambulance and performing CPR, Monahan said. Williams was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 8:01 a.m.

The other man was hospitalized and treated for knife wounds.
