The Stanton Street Shul, the Siempre Verde community garden and the LES Jewish Conservancy are coming together for a kid-focused spring celebration on Sunday May 18 built around the Jewish holiday of Lag B’Omer.

In the garden, there will be seed planting, marshmallow roasting, and seed planting. Inside the synagogue (located just across the street), art and music teachers will be holding a scavenger hunt and offering arts & crafts, rock painting, and a special music concert.

Organizers tell us the painting posted above by artist and teacher David Wander…

…connects to an older tradition of Jewish religious zodiacs called mazoles or mazelot, as re-interpreted by Stanton Street artists. The twelve original immigrant mazoles can be seen in the main sanctuary. The bow and rainbow are symbols associated with Lag B’Omer and with the promise, or covenant of a green world that starts again after the destruction of the flood. Lag B’Omer is a Jewish holiday that joyously marks the halfway point of counting the days between two important festivals: Passover (Pesach) and Shevuot. On Pesach, we mark the Exodus with the remembrance of enslavement; on Shevuot we remember the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Pesach is associated with the barley harvest; Shevuot, the wheat harvest.

The event is part of Lower East Side History Month.  It takes place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
