Hundreds of residents of the Seward Park Cooperative will be eating out for awhile. This afternoon a gas line failed in one of four buildings (383-387 Grand St.), meaning people living in more than 400 apartments will not be able to use their stove tops or ovens for an extended period.
The gas line cannot be repaired, according to Seward Park General Manager Frank Durant. So with Con Ed’s assistance tomorrow morning, a new line will be brought in from Grand Street. Because city agencies must approve the work and because every apartment in the building, near Norfolk Street, must be inspected, it could take a few weeks before life returns to normal for building residents. No other services will be impacted; apartments will still have heat and hot water.
Durant said the co-op is making arrangements to provide some food in the lobby and hot plates will be distributed. There are a large number of elderly residents in the Seward Park buildings.
UPDATE 10:23 p.m.: The gas line was shut down after a gas leak was detected. In an email to residents, co-op management wrote: “We are looking at a repair that could require lengthy period of time. At the moment, we cannot credibly predict how long, but it would be best to prepare for several months without cooking-gas service.”
Are you sure it’s 208 East Broadway? Others are saying it’s Building 4, which is 383/385/387 Grand.
