A large fight ended in the stabbing of a man on East Broadway last night. Late into the evening, police were still determining how it all began.
Witnesses tell us 30-40 men were involved in the brawl. One local resident, who called 911, said he saw one young man swinging what looked to be a rake. When we came upon the scene shortly before midnight, police said one person had been stabbed; he was hospitalized in stable condition and was expected to survive.
Blood was visible on the street in front of the Wing Shoon restaurant and debris was scattered on the ground. Officers were interviewing a number of witnesses and checking camera phone videos and photos taken by onlookers. We hope to have more details from the NYPD later today.
UPDATED 5:19 p.m. A police spokesperson says the victim was a 17-year old boy; he was transported to Bellevue Hospital. One suspect, another teenager, has been arrested and faces assault charges.
Hope the injured person was not an innocent bystander.

Something needs to be done about this horrible subway station. Even with the on and off 24 hour police presence, this place is still nightmarish. Drug sales happen right in front of police officers. Seems like something like this happens every week. Thugs and hooligans hanging out on the corner, subway entrance from the ’70’s, homeless selling garbage on the already blocked and barely passable sidewalk. Start by fixing the damn sidewalk/curb which numerous people have already tripped on. Then, fine the store owners for allowing people to hang out in their own entrances. Might also have to set up a temporary police outpost to deal with these idiots. I would just like to be able to come/go home from work and not feel like I’m passing through a drug deal. Is that asking too much? Stuff like this make makes me pray for quicker gentrification. And don’t give me that, “we need another teen center”, crap. Any politicians listening?

Totally agree! This F Train station is a nightmare and so dangerous. You just have to hope that you’re not robbed down there or thrown into the tracks. How frightening that there is no way to get help in that station if needed. A NYPD officer told me that even they cannot get cell phone service down there.
Meanwhile, the Chinese old guy who sells ‘swipes’ on his subway card is still in operation . The police told me months ago that he had been arrested at least 38 times, but he is always quickly released. They told me that he and another guy were the ones who frequently jammed the vending machines so that no one could buy new cards!

Can’t say whether or not it was a gang but it was definitely kids from the projects.
The last I heard on the police scanner was that they thought they had gone into the subway. They stopped the trains at Delancey but didn’t find anyone. The person who got stabbed was not a bystander, they were throwing the trashcans and newspaper boxes at each other (you can see the debris in the pics above)
