Holidays 2012: Keeping it Local on the LES

Must Read

Here’s your weekend edition of our “keeping it local” holiday guide.  Remember: keep sending us your shopping, dining and event ideas to tips@thelodownny.com.

  • Tonight Fourth Arts Block is saying so long to its cafe by throwing a holiday party from 5-7.  Next year the space will become the “FAB Lab,” a shared creative workspace. They’ll be auctioning off cafe memorabilia and saying thanks to the staff.  The cafe is located at 75 East 4th Street.
  • The New Design High School has a pop-up shop in the Lower East Side Visitor Center (the BID), 54 Orchard Street, through 5 p.m. today. They’re offering holiday gifts made by the students.  You can pick up a cutom designed t-shirt or bag and support a great school.
  • Next Tuesday, the Museum of Chinese in America is holding an Ugly Sweater Holiday Party, which benefits CAAAV, a community organization that was very busy in the past few weeks coming to the aid of residents left in the dark and cold due to the hurricane. There will be live music, spiked punch and, or course, an ugly sweater contest.  Admission is $20.  More details on MOCA’s web site.
  • You may have heard Saxelby Cheesemongers was hit pretty hard by Hurricane Sandy. Their Essex Street Market stall is fine, but unfortunately Saxelby’s Red Hook refrigeration facility took a beating.  The regional cheese specialist will be back at the New Amsterdam Market this weekend, along with other LES vendors such as Pushcart Coffee.  The Seaport was obviously devastated by the storm, so they could really use your support.
