Coming Up Sunday: Lower East Side Pickle Day

Lower East Side Pickle Day is coming up this Sunday on Orchard Street.  This year, the Lower East Side BID is folding the event into its DayLife street festival franchise, which was started this past summer to reinvigorate foot traffic in the neighborhood’s legendary but struggling shopping district.

Guss’ Pickles, which fled to Brooklyn three years ago, will be back for the big event, along with the Pickle Guys,  Rick’s Picks and many others.  There will also be a Halloween costume contest, a home pickling contest, ping pong and street hoops sponsored by Basketball City and, apparently, some rapping grandmas and DJ’s in front of Tammany Hall.   Pickle Day takes place from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday on Orchard, between East Houston and Delancey. Activities:

Halloween costume contest!  Check in at the LES BID table (located on Orchard between Stanton and E. Houston) to enter between 2-3pm. Winner announced at 4:15pm in the Performance Area (Orchard between Delancey and Rivington). Prizes include a chocolate gift basket from Roni-Sue’s Chocolates, a $100 gift certificate to Galli Restaurant and an LES t-shirt!
Home Pickling Contest, Drop off submissions at the BID table (located on Orchard between Stanton and E. Houston)
DJ Lessons and spin art sponsored by Scratch Academy, 12-5pm
Ping Pong and Street Hoops provided by Basketball City, 12-5pm
Badminton, 12-5pm
Urban Croquet, 12-5pm
Fitness demonstrations by David Barton Gym, 12-5pm
Kids face-painting and balloon animals, 1-4pm in the Performance Area
Ballroom Dancing, 1-3pm in the Performance Area
Fantasy Grandma, rapping grannies, 3:35-4:15pm in the Performance Area
Belly Dancing instruction and performance, 3-3:45pm & 4:15-5pm in the Performance Area
