Katz’s has a new neighbor. Tim Hortons, a Canadian coffee and baked goods chain, is opening a franchise at 203 East Houston Street, directly next to the famous delicatessen. While work seems far from complete, a sign announcing the arrival of the new café was posted above the storefront.
In truly Canadian form, the chain bears the name of a former NHL legend, who died in 1974 after opening a number of coffee and donut shops in Ontario. The brand is establishing a growing presence in the city, with 11 recently opened branches. This new store is the first to appear downtown (other locations are clustered in Midtown and Brooklyn Heights), so we’ll see if it fares better than the location’s previous tenants, a string of short-lived restaurants.
ugh, another gross chain! (and i’m canadian…)
Chain store. More horrible junk food.
What is up with all these chains? Starbucks on Ave A, now this!
