Funny Songs Festival Comes to the Lower East Side Next Week

Must Read

Our friend Jessica Delfino got a nice write-up in the Times in advance of a new event she’s organized, the Funny Songs Festival, which kicks off next Thursday at locations throughout the Lower East Side.  The Lo-Down is excited to be media sponsor of New York’s only comedy music festival.  Here’s an excerpt:

“Comedy music has had a strange relationship with the world since it started,” said Ms. Delfino, who has performed comedy songs for a decade. “Imagine, if you will, a kid who is kind of nerdy and awkward in sixth grade, buck teeth and whatever. As he gets older, he learns sports and gets cool. That’s what’s happening here.” Although pioneers like Tom Lehrer and the Smothers Brothers have always made people laugh, it’s true that in the last several years alternative comics (who, as Ms. Delfino pointed out, are now mainstream comics, much in the way indie-rockers have found a steady home on the pop chart) have seized upon the fusion of music and comedy as an easy way to appeal to like-minded peers: savvy urban-dwellers obsessed with their record collections and unimpressed by clunky, punch-line-reliant zingers.

We’ll have much more on the festival next week. In the meantime. check out the event’s web site for detailed information.
