This weekend a section of Forsyth Street will be co-named Harry Wieder Way, in memory of the well-known community activist killed in a traffic accident two years ago.
Friends and family will gather Sunday at 2 p.m., at the corner of Forsyth and Rivington streets. The event is being sponsored by City Council members Rosie Mendez and Margaret Chin. Following the co-naming, there will be a reception at University Settlement’s Houston Street Center, 273 Bowery.
Wieder was struck by a taxi cab in April of 2010 as he left a Community Board 3 meeting on Essex Street. He was a longtime advocate for the disabled and LGBT communities.
