American Realness Festival Returns to Abrons This Week

Must Read

This week, the edgy “American Realness Festival” returns to the Abrons Arts Center for a two week program of boundary-busting dance, theater and musical performances.  Thomas Benjamin Snapp Pryor has expanded the offerings this year to 20 productions in all three theaters.

Artforum says of the festival: “All the legendary children of the New York dance world (are) served up over one crash-course…”  Abrons’ Ryan Wenzel, who also has his own dance blog (Bodies never Lie), writes of this year’s program:

The festival’s third iteration features world and U.S. premieres by Big Art Group, Daniel Linehan, and Laura Arrington, as well as encore engagements of John Jasperse’s Canyon, Wally Cardona and Jennifer Lacey’s TOOL IS LOOT, and Trajal Harrell’s (M)imosa/Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church (M). Several of the festival’s veteran performers — Ann Liv Young, Jack Ferver, and Keith Hennessy – return with new, recent, or improvised pieces, and a works-in-progress series offers free previews of works by Miguel Gutierrez, Luciana Achugar, and Big Dance Theater.

You can see the full schedule and buy tickets on the Abrons Art Center web site.
