Weekend Music Picks

Must Read

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side for this weekend:

Morricone Youth

MORRICONE YOUTH – Fri, Nov. 4 | 9PM at Rockwood Music Hall

It’s always fun when smart, talented musicians go conceptual with their band or repertoire. Morricone Youth are a snappy-dressing sextet specializing in covers of dramatic film scores and soundtrack music (mostly from the 60s and 70s). They work their magic incredibly well doing faithful renditions, as well as their own contemporary interpretations of others. Even their original compositions seem tailor-made for a stoic Clint Eastwood, smoldering in the Italian desert sun. FREE//196 Allen St.

SUZANNA CHOFFEL – Sat Nov. 5 І 9pm at The Living Room

Suzanna Choffel

Austin has long been considered a hotbed of musical talent, and Suzanna Choffel certainly does her part to sustain that view. The Texas songwriter/multi-instrumentalist is now 2 albums and a Microsoft commercial into her career, and one gets the sense that she’s just getting warmed up. With a precise, smoky voice and a talent for arranging, Choffel produces sassy jazz-pop songs that are as inventive as they are catchy.  FREE//154 Ludlow St.

BUGS IN THE DARK – Sun, Nov. 6 | 8PM at The Mercury Lounge

Bugs In The Dark

God bless extremely loud three-piece rock bands. It’s not often that a band gets called “The Future of New York City Music,” but that’s exactly what The Deli Magazine said about Brooklyn’s Bugs In The Dark. The hard-thrashing trio have not only simultaneously stunned and ignited audiences for the last 4 years, but they’ve also successfully utilized the social media realm by launching a Kickstarter campaign and reaching their goal. The result will manifest at this Sunday’s release party of their new EP, “Hang It On The Wall.” $9 //217 E Houston St

Splitting his time between performing and producing, contributor Ken Beasley primarily plays with his own roots/rock band, Ken Beasley & Co., as well as the power punk outfit, Missy Sport, while also curating the Underground at the Abrons music series on the Lower East Side
