Health Dept. Shutters Overseas Taste on Canal

Must Read

Overseas Taste Restaurant

The city’s health inspectors closed neighborhood Malaysian restaurant Overseas Taste at 49 Canal St. yesterday, citing 10 violations of sanitary regulations totalling 82 points.

The problems noted included improper holding temperatures for both hot and cold foods, the presence of roaches and problems with plumbing and food-preparation surfaces.

It was the restaurant’s third inspection this year; two previous visits by the health department in February yielded 27 and 25 points, which both qualified as “B” grades under the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s year-old grading system. Records show Overseas Taste has never earned fewer than 24 points on inspections dating back to August 2008.

Restaurants receiving low grades, including those that are forced to close, can be reinspected and reopen if they resolve the violations. For example, Allen Street vegetarian favorite Tien Garden was forced to close earlier this month after receiving 76 points in a July 5 inspection; it reopened a week later with an “A” grade.

You can check the status of any restaurant in the five boroughs using the city’s searchable database. Look for The Lo-Down’s comprehensive Restaurant Report Card on the third Wednesday of every month; we’ll post the July report Aug. 10.

  1. Wing Shoon on East Broadway has never posted their ‘C’ grade. Shouldn’t they be doing this? They have 57 violation points

  2. Yes, the law requires every restaurant to post its most recent grade in a prominent place where passersby and customers can see it.
