Around five-thousand people marched through the streets of Chinatown yesterday in celebration of the Year of the Rabbit. It was a beautiful day for Manhattan’s Chinese Lunar New Year Parade. We walked with the lion dancers, marching bands and floats as they made their way down Mott Street. Lots of photos after the jump!
The neighborhood’s elected officials, of course, participated in yesterday’s parade. But in a demonstration’s of Chinatown’s growing influence, politicians came from all over the city. Senator Charles Schumer, New York City Comptroller John Liu, District Attorney Cy Vance and Assemblymember Grace Meng were among those sharing the pre-parade stage.
The first Chinese representative of Chinatown, City Councilmember Margaret Chin, with U.S. Representatives Nydia Velazquez and Carolyn Maloney.
Parade organizer, Steven Tin of the Better Chinatown Society, let nothing distract him from the task at hand.
