It’s going to be an action packed weekend on the Lower East Side. Along with Ken Beasley’s Music Picks, the Steampunk Haunted House at Abrons and an East Village eating tour that supports the arts, here are a few more events worth checking out.
Friday, October 22
- Invisible Exports gallery is hosting a marathon three-day video festival, Public Service Announcement, featuring a new video program each day from noon through midnight. The programs will be viewable from both inside the gallery and outside on the street. Free // 12p-midnight // 14A Orchard St.
- Books Through Bars is holding their Annual Bingo Fundraiser at ABC No Rio. The volunteer organization provides free reading materials to people incarcerated across America. There will be live music, beverages and fun prizes including $100 tattoo from NY Adorned, IFC year-long membership, magnificent meals at Pure Food & Wine and Caravan of Dreams, sex toys from Babeland! - Brooklyn-based theater company Sponsored by Nobody is holding two open rehearsals at the University Settlement’s Performance Project this weekend. Their workshop production of “ ATM or this is [not] new york ” uses New Yorkers’ interactions with our city’s homeless population as a means to investigate shifting values in the wake of the financial crisis. Saturday, October 23
- The CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival has taken over the city, including most venues on the Lower East Side. There are plenty of free events and parties to go to even if you don’t have an industry badge. Moscot Music will be holding their “Unofficial CMJ Party,” featuring ROBBERS ON HIGH STREET, AKUDAMA and JACOB C. MORRIS, in their historic Orchard St. Gallery. Free // 2-5p // 118 Orchard St.
- The Midnight Movie at the Sunshine is Spooktacular!, a horror fest of trailers from both classic and campy horror films, “a hilarious—and oddly disturbing—early Technicolor cartooncalled The Cobweb Hotel (1936) and, as the main attraction, a full-length, uncut print of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968), the gross-out classic that literally changed the face of screen terror.” $9.99 // Fri. 22, Sat. 23 at midnight // 143 E. Houston Street.
- Radio Purgatory continues it’s run at Dixon Place. Theater THE has put together an absurd tribute to the days of radio in the 1930’s and 40’s featuring “live musical performance, film and vaudevillian style physical comedy, while exploring the meaning of existence, the absurdity of self-importance and the power struggle between the sexes and classes.” $15 advance, $20 door // Thursdays – Saturdays, October 21 – 23, 28 – 30 // 7:30pm on Thursdays & Fridays; 10:00pm on Saturdays // 161A Chrystie Street.
Sunday, October 24
- The Educational Alliance Art School will present a Dialogue With the Artist Giuseppe Luciani. Luciani, a 2011 NYFA Artists’ Fellowship recipient, will show images of his work and discuss his inspiration, technique and working methods. - The long-running monthly salon or “ceremony” for artists (see this article in the NYTims), The Secret City, recently moved to Dixon Place. (They have a great blog here.) - Our music contributor Ken Beasley is performing at Rockwood Music Hall (Stage 1). Ken will play some of his roots/rock originals and a few songs from his album, Greenhorn.
