Good Morning: Maloney Victorious, Mega-Gallery Preview, Birdbath at the New Museum

Must Read

The New York Times

The photo in this morning’s New York Times tells the story: Rep. Carolyn Maloney celebrating a convincing victory in the Democratic Primary last night.  In spite of a spirited challenge from challenger Reshma Saujani, she carried the 14th Congressional District (including part of the Lower East Side) with about 80-percent of the vote.

There weren’t many surprises last night. Voters seemed unmoved by newspaper editorial boards, which urged them to “throw the bums out.”  Eric Schneiderman, who was backed by almost all of this neighborhood’s political establishment, won the Democratic nomination for attorney general.

In other news, it was a big day for the neighborhood at the Landmarks Preservation Commission yesterday.  We already reported the commissioners voted to protect a portion of the Loew’s Canal Theater.  They also awarded landmark status to two other buildings: 97 Bowery and The Eleventh Street Episcopal Methodist Chapel.

There are a few interesting items on the agenda of Community Board 3’s transportation committee tonight. Among them: the co-naming of a section of Forsyth Street in memory of  Harry Wieder, the longtime community activist who was killed as he tried to cross a street a few months back.  CB3 will also be briefed on an upcoming construction project on Grand Street, west of Essex, that involves installing new water pipes.

There’s good news for devotees of the City Bakery.  Their cafe chainlet, Birdbath, will be opening a new location in the New Museum today.  The bakery has even created a “New Museum cookie” for the occasion!

We’ll all be benefiting from Bravo’s shameless “Top Chef” promotion today.  There will be free dessert at many NYC restaurants, including several here on the LES (we’ll have details in a separate post). And, in honor of San Gennaro (consuming Little Italy beginning tomorrow), two neighborhood guys are melding Italian and Chinese cuisine.

And last but not least, Art Info got a quick tour of the eight-story,  20,000 sq/ft. Sperone Westwater Gallery, opening on the Bowery next week.

Sunny and 75 degrees today.  Rain showers possible tomorrow.
