Apply for the Lower East Side Coastal Community Fellowship

The Arctic Cycle

64 Bleecker St
New York, NY 10012
United States

We are currently accepting applications for the LES Coastal Community Fellowship, a paid creative residency for a group of neighbors and stakeholders in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The fellowship will empower eight participants to reflect on the years since Hurricane Sandy, build upon existing community resilience to climate impacts, and envision a thriving future for the neighborhood through stories, poems, songs, performance, or other creative means. Applications will be accepted online until September 20, 2020 at 11:59 p.m.

Selected applicants will participate in 6 two-hour sessions on Zoom between October 14-31, 2020. The fellowship carries a stipend of $500. This fellowship is the first part of an intended three-year process, with fellows reconvening in October 2021 and October 2022, and the process culminating in a public performance event in October 2022 at the ten-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy.

You don’t need to have any formal or academic experience as an artist to participate. If you are invested in a just and thriving future for the Lower East Side, interested in using your creativity and imagination, and open to building new connections while learning new skills, this is for you.

The fellowship is facilitated by The Arctic Cycle and Superhero Clubhouse, two NYC-based arts collectives working at the intersection of theater and climate justice. We are dedicated to creating anti-racist and anti-oppressive environments, free from discrimination or harm. Applicants of any race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, national origin, age, marital status or disability will be reviewed and considered equitably. We will prioritize applicants who are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change in the Lower East Side, for example but not limited to: Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Chinese, other People of Color, LGBTQIA+, low-income and public housing residents, people with disabilities, seniors and youth.
