Top NYC Chefs Unite at Gala to Support Education in Rural Africa

New York, NY: November 4, 2015 Members of New York's culinary scene will come together on November 19th to help provide quality education to children in rural Africa.

The fifth annual Chefs for Impact fundraising dinner will be held at the Angel Orensanz Foundation Center on the Lower East Side, Manhattan. It will feature a spectacular multi-course gourmet menu, cocktail reception, live music, and live and silent auctions with one-of-a-kind items.

All proceeds from Chefs for Impact will benefit Impact Network, a New York-based non-profit organization that brings e-learning education to more than 2,000 students in rural Zambia where over 90% of students fail to meet desired education standards. "When thinking about low-cost alternatives for high-quality education in Zambia, e-learning combined with comprehensive supports are the future," Reshma Patel, Executive Director of the group, said. "It's an exciting time to bring technology-based development solutions to Africa, especially in rural areas that are often overlooked for this kind of intervention."

Featured chefs at the event include Eric McCarthy of Tulsi, Mark Henegan of Madiba Brooklyn and Madiba Harlem, Eric Simeon of Citigroup, Christopher Burgess of Bustan, Paul Denamiel of Le Rivage, and Rhonda Crosson, Head Baker of Meyers Bageri. Desserts will be provided by Matt Swanston of Gooey & Co and Knipschildt Chocolatier.

Corporate and in-kind sponsors of the event include Tito's Handmade Vodka, Extraordinary Journeys Safaris, Lagunitas Brewing Company and Chateaux Bonnet wines.

Impact Network was launched in 2009 by Dan Sutera, David Seidenfeld and Michael Weiss, and now operates 10 eSchools, serving more than 2,000 students at a cost of just $3 a student monthly. The non-profit published results of an independent impact evaluation this year, which demonstrated that students at Impact Network schools receive quality education at a third of the price of other schools through a model that can be scaled nationally.
