A big story is developing this morning at Pier 11 near Wall Street. A commuter ferry has crashed into the pier, injuring up to 50 people. Most of the injuries are believed to be minor, but at least one person suffered a serious head injury. A Seastreak ferry came in for a very hard landing as it prepared to drop passengers off. Some people were taken off the ferry on stretchers. The accident happened at around 9 a.m. The ferry was reportedly coming from Atlantic Highlands, NJ. See above for chopper video from Channel 4.
UPDATE 10:19 A.M. The ferry company reported there were 343 passengers on board. Many of those injured were thrown from their seats. The ferry is 140 feet long. The injury count is up to 57. One person is critical. This photo (above) was posted on twitter by @911Buff.
UPDATE 10:39 A.M. NBC New York is now reporting 57 total injuries. Two people are in critical condition, one with severe head injuries. Five crew members are among those injured. They are hearing that Mayor Bloomberg may be on his way to the scene. The Coast Guard is now on the scene, as well.
