Video: Olek Trades Yarn For Balloons on the Streets of the LES

Olek is back at it.  This time, however, the attention-grabbing artist has set aside her balls of yarn in favor of balloons. Olek’s new exhibition, at Krause Gallery, is a collaboration with David Peterson.  Have a look at the video from the opening reception. The show, Synthetic Nature, is up until April 10th. Krause Gallery is at 149 Orchard Street (Wenesday-Sunday).

Good Morning!

Broome Street, near Elizabeth — Olek is at it again.

Partly cloudy and 43 today. 54 and cloudy tomorrow. Rain showers on Sunday with a high of 55. Lots going on this weekend, including “Canned Ham” at Dixon Place tonight, “First Saturdays” for Families at the New Museum tomorrow and “Deer Tick” at the Bowery Ballroom Sunday. Don’t forget to consult Ken Beasley’s Weekend Music Picks and our new Kids Page for the Weekend Kids Pick. Have a fun, relaxing weekend!

World’s Strangest Chocolates, Condo & Kanye, Verifying Crime Stats

  • A Berkeley law professor offers independent corroboration of NYPD crime stats (WSJ).
  • “From Caravaggio to Kanye,” Calvin Tomkins discusses George Condo’s work (his show opens at the New Museum today) and the controversial cover art he made for Kanye West’s most recent album (New Yorker).
  • Some great photos of Lower East Side “Crocheting Queen,” OLEK, who is currently teaching a crochet sculpture class at the Educational Alliance (NYDN).

We have received word that the famous gorilla artist Olek – yes, the one who has been crocheting all sorts of objects around the neighborhood, from bicycles to cars, and most recently, the Wall Street Bull – will be teaching a class, “Crochet Sculpture!” at the Educational Alliance starting this Monday, January 24th.  The class description: Crochet for beginners, artists and experienced ‘crocheters,’ this class will be a creative laboratory.
