Congee Village, 100 Allen Street.
Here’s a follow-up on Saturday morning’s fire at 101 Orchard Street/101 Allen Street. This afternoon Congee Village management says they expect to reopen Friday, after making repairs in the kitchen.
While the Fire Department has not yet determined a cause, it appears the fire began in the restaurant and smoke then worked its way through the building’s ducts. Today workers were removing large equipment from the kitchen and hauling it away. They’re also taking the opportunity to give the place a good scrub-down inside and out. Congee Village posted a sign on its front door advising customers that the establishment is “closed for maintenance.” They were encouraged to visit Congee Bowery (207 Bowery).

In food/restaurant news today:
- Landbrot, a new German bread maker, has signed a 10-year lease for a ground floor space at 185 Orchard (the Thompson LES Hotel). It’ll be one of two Manhattan locations. According to Crain’s the cafe should open in around three months.
- Gothamist chats with Hotel Chantelle (92 Ludlow) owner Benjamin Shih; a full-scale restaurant (French Colonial) is planned to complement the cocktails currently being served — AND — there’s going to be a large rooftop dining area.
- The Post is in a dither because “Chinese Restaurant News” only included two New York restaurants on its top 10 list (Congee Village is #9). A place in Bryn Mawr, PA is number 1! Bryn Mawr?
- Florence Fabricant talks up the “real buttermilk” that Saxelby Cheesemongers gets direct from an Orwell, Vermont farm.
The best congee (26 varieties) in New York City can be found at this large restaurant on Allen Street, and its sister outpost on the Bowery. But there’s a huge menu (250 items long) featuring a wide variety of Cantonese and Hong Kong specialties. The crispy garlic chicken is legendary. Other favorites include: razor clams in a salty black bean sauce, sweet potato greens, roast duck with meatballs and chicken with black mushrooms. There are four party rooms downstairs, each featuring a multi-lingual karaoke machine!
