This week partners Curvel Baptiste and Courtney Carreras launched a brand new venture on the Lower East Side — samplesaleshop.com. From their headquarters on Allen Street, the company hosts a revolving door of virtual 72 hour pop-up shops — offering cutting edge streetwear brands at deeply discounted prices — worldwide. They’ve both got backgrounds in the hip hop recording industry and started the popular Milkshake shoe brand. Courtney co-authored “Coming up from the Down-Low” and along with Curvel collaborated on “The Down Low Exposed,” which aired on BET in 2006. The idea behind samplesaleshop.com is to bring New York style to the world outside New York. You can take a look at their web site and blog for more info.

We’ve been meaning to post a little update on Essex Flowers’ move to Grand Street. Owner Bill Frazer is settling in at 365 Grand Street, the former home of the infamous pizzeria, Isabella’s Oven. It’s a much larger location than the old flower shop at 39 Essex. He’s fixed up the backyard nicely and hopes to hold some special events out there in the future (pumpkin picking, for instance). Our friends at the Hester Street Fair would like you to know you can keep cool and stay stylish this weekend because both the Misting Oasis Tent and the popular “Summer Stylist Tent Event” will be back on Saturday and Sunday. Stylists, designers, showrooms, fashion insiders and “fashonistas” empty their closets, drop it all off and shoppers get a chance to go through the goods.

From time to time, we like to check in with the neighborhood’s business owners to see how things are going “on the front lines.” Recently, I stopped by Zarin Fabric Warehouse to chat with David Zarin, president of one of the Lower East Side’s iconic companies. Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver recalled his grandparents’ house at 77 Hester Street just down the block, where they established the first of what is now five generations of Silvers to make their home in the neighborhood.
Wei-Li Tjong recounted childhood moments of staring through iron gates at the formerly neglected lot at the corner of Essex and Hester that belongs to the Seward Park Co-op, where he still makes his home and is a member of the board of directors.
The two men were among a parade of elected officials, organizers and neighborhood leaders with local connections who gathered Sunday afternoon to celebrate the official grand opening of the fledgling Hester Street Fair.

Here’s this week’s email blast from the Hester Street Fair:
First thing’s first…we are hosting a SPRING CLEAN SALE for the families affected by the recent fire on Grand Street in Chinatown. Local residents, hipsters, stylists and friends cleaned out their fabulous closets last weekend and it’s all on sale, this Sunday, May 23, with every penny being donated to the fire fund. All week long you’ve been able to eat at some local favorite joints offering proceeds of sales and this is the final event. I’m hoping it will be a big number after so many have participated and generously donated. From never worn limited edition Reeboks to a full Iron Man 2 box set compete with helmet to lots of barely worn designer duds, everything is priced to GO! Come shop, drop off stuff in the morning and support our neighbors in need.
