Police Seek Help in Finding Shooting Suspect

Earlier this week we posted an item about a fatal shooting at 46 Madison Street, near the Alfred E. Smith Houses. This morning, the Village Voice has a few more details – and a plea from police for help in finding the suspect. According to the report, the victim was 28-year old Anthony Evans, a resident of the Smith housing development.  Investigators  now want to question the man pictured above, Pierre Hecker, 29, of 1295 5th Avenue in East Harlem. Breaking: Fatal Shooting on Madison Street

WPIX is reporting a man was shot and killed overnight outside the Alfred Smith Houses, on Madison Street, just to the west of Catherine. The TV station indicated the address was 46 Madison. Police said the victim, 28 years old, was shot three times — in the torso, right arm and head. The man was taken to Beekman Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No suspects are in custody. The victim’s name will not be released until his family is notified.

Large Crowd Fills East Broadway for National Night Out

From Columbus Park, to East 5th Street, the Smith Houses, to East Broadway, the Lower East Side’s police precincts hosted National Night Out Against Crime last night. Slum Goddess checked out the East Village scene. We were on hand for the 7th Precinct’s event, which drew a big crowd and included everything from a petting zoo to free food and mariachi dancers. “National Night Out” on the Lower East Side

This morning (and last week) we mentioned “National Night Out Against Crime,” an annual event held in neighborhoods across the country. Breaking: Eight Year Old Girl Sexually Assaulted on Forsyth Street

Police are saying an 8-year old girl was sexually assaulted last Thursday afternoon by a man who followed her into a building on Forsyth Street. Police released a videotape and still image of the suspect tonight. They described him as heavy-set, between 20-30 years old, about 5 foot 7, wth short dark hair. He was last seen wearing a dark short sleeve t-shirt, blue jeans, white sneakers and a dark Yankees baseball cap. They say he was carrying a backpack.

Is Violent Crime Increasing on the Lower East Side?

There’s been a lot of coverage in the tabloids the past few months about the rising crime rate in New York City. Just today, the Daily News reported there have been 59 murders in North Brooklyn this year (there were 43 in the same period last year). Citywide the murder rate is up 11 percent. But what’s the story on the Lower East Side?

Chinatown Safety & Crime Prevention Event Tomorrow

Tomorrow afternoon at 2pm the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and the NYPD and the New York City District Attorneys Office are sponsoring a crime prevention seminar. Experts will offer advice on how to avoid becoming a crime victim. There will be Chinese-language brochures available.  It will be held at CCBA Headquarters, 62 Mott Street.

Community Discusses Seward Park Library Incident; Security Cameras to be Installed

A community forum convened Sunday to discuss responses to last month’s assault of a 9-year-old girl in Seward Park Library drew together local elected officials and community leaders from diverse organizations, eliciting promises to work together to fight crime and producing a pledge from a library official that security cameras will be installed there.

Angela Montefinise, the public relations manager for the library system, told the group assembled at The Educational Alliance building on East Broadway that there is a plan to add cameras at the library, which has only one security guard.

Chin, Squadron, Stringer to Attend Tomorrow’s Forum on Seward Park Library Assault

A wide range of community groups and elected officials will be taking part in tomorrow’s community forum, being held in response to the May 6th sexual assaut of a 9-year old girl in the Seward Park Library. We understand City Councilmember Margaret Chin, State Senator Daniel Squadron, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, and possibly, Rep. Nydia Velazquez will all be attending.

During the forum, parents and community leaders will have the opportunity to discuss the incident and overall safety issues related to children in the neighborhood.  There will also be presentations from personal safety experts.

Police Investigate Sexual Assault of 9-Year-old Girl in Seward Park Library

Police are asking for help, as they search for a man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl inside the Seward park Library on Thursday. According to WCBS, the victim said the suspect grabbed her by the shirt on the second floor, around 530pm.

The girl told police the man covered her mouth, and then attacked her in the library. The victim was with her family, but got separtaed from them near the bathroom. There’s apparently one security guard working at the library at any given time.
