Serial Burglar Sentenced in Chinatown Break-ins

During October and November of 2010, 12 homes in Chinatown were burglarized, often in the early pre-dawn hours while residents slept in their beds. The thief made off with credit cards, cell phones, laptops and other electronics, taking advantage of buildings with unlocked front doors, according to court records.

Here’s a follow-up on that overnight shootout near the Baruch Houses a week ago Sunday.  The suspect, Luis Martinez, was charged yesterday with two counts each of first degree attempted murder, attempted assault and 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon.  He is being held without bail.

There was a lot of activity around the Baruch Houses late last night. Gunfire erupted about 1:30 a.m. as police were questioning a man on Columbia Street. Police say the man opened fire on police officers Thomas Richards and Thomas Dunne, and then fled down Rivington Street.

This afternoon, police were called to an apartment building at 210 Stanton Street (just west of Pitt), where a 16-year old girl was shot, allegedly by her boyfriend.  The victim was rushed to Bellevue Hospital with a gun shot wound to the arm. Community Activist Accused of Embezzling From Low-Income Forsyth Street Co-op

A Lower East Side political activist with a history of criticizing abusers of subsidized housing has been accused of stealing more than $260,000 from a small low-income co-op at 172 Forsyth St. for which he served as the property manager, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
