Going “Inside” Jewish Sacred Sites with the LES Conservancy

Conservancy's new visitor center, 400 Grand Street.

Last month, we reported the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy is preparing to open a new Visitor Center at 400 Grand Street later this summer.  If you walk by the storefront, formerly Ruby’s Fruits, you might notice a poster promoting the Conservancy’s new “Insider Tours,” abbreviated versions of their more detailed neighborhood walking excursions. Recently, we were invited to experience the tours for ourselves. Continue reading Going “Inside” Jewish Sacred Sites with the LES Conservancy

CB3 Wades Into Ground Zero Mosque Controversy

Patrick Hedlund of DNA Info sums up last night’s debate at Community Board 3 over the Muslim community center proposed near the World Trade Center site. In a 17-12 vote, CB3 chose to support Community Board 1′s decision to endorse the project.  Many conservatives, including Sarah Palin and Tea Party activists, have made a political issue of the Cordoba Center, which would include a mosque.

TLD Interview: CB3 Chair Dominic Pisciotta

CB3 Chair Dominic Pisciotta

Is the Lower East Side ready to make a deal? That’s the question two urban planners hired by the city will be seeking to answer when they meet with members of Community Board 3′s SPURA Task Force Thursday night.  It will be the third of four “facilitated” sessions meant to determine if neighborhood factions can finally reach a consensus on a development plan for the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area.  Recently, I discussed the deliberations with CB3 Chairman Dominic Pisciotta, who played a central role in the creation of the panel.  The time is right, he said, for action, “to do something good for the neighborhood.”

People on the Lower East Side have been fighting about SPURA since at least 1967, when thousands of homes and businesses were bulldozed in the name of urban renewal.  Pisciotta first became interested in the issue in late 2003, not long after moving into the Seward Park Cooperative on Grand Street.  During an infamous public hearing to discuss Michael Bloomberg’s mixed-use plan for SPURA, Pisciotta witnessed first hand the bitter divisions that have sabotaged every redevelopment effort in the past 43 years. “That was a really crazy night,” he said, “I was shocked by the comments from both sides.”

Chinatown Working Group: LES Question Unresolved

Mott Street

It seemed so simple. Members of the Chinatown Working Group (CWG) were being asked to approve a fairly routine document — a job description of sorts for an urban planning consultant who will begin working with the organization later this year.  But last night, at the American Legion meeting room on Canal Street, the proceedings became complicated and contentious in a hurry.
