The Clemente Center Presents Open Doors Open Studios, Friday and Saturday, May 31  & June 1, 2019

The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center is hosting its 23rd annual building-wide Visual & Performing Arts event, Open Doors Open Studios, on Friday, May 31st from 6:00 – 9:00pm and Saturday, June 1st from 4:00 – 8:00pm. This year’s event will feature five floors of visual and performance art plus theater, film, dance and musical events. All events are FREE and open to the public.

The Clemente stands as a compliment and bridge to the current development of the Lower East Side, housed in the beautiful, former PS 160 designed in 1897 by Charles B. J. Snyder in the Dutch neo-gothic style. The public is invited to come explore this culturally diverse representation of the community which houses 11 visual and performing arts organizations and over 46 visual artists’ studios.

A series of performances ranging from Jazz to Capoeira to Comedy, produced by Clemente resident organizations, will take place in the Flamboyan Theater on Saturday, June 1 beginning with children’s performances at 3:00pm and the main program running from 4:00-8:00pm.  A complete schedule of performances is available on the website.

In conjunction with the Open Doors Open Studios weekend, Public Spaces Open Studios 2019 (PSOS19) is exhibiting site-specific work by artists selected from an open call  in 15 public spaces throughout the building on view from May 31st through June 30th, 2019 by appointment.

In addition, Freight + Volume and a local not for profit Gallery (TBA) were invited to exhibit large format works/installations in the Abrazo Gallery and the LES Gallery from May 31st through June 29th.
