AG-Approved Management Firm Hired For Steve Croman’s Buildings

The state attorney general has apparently selected a firm to manage Steven Croman’s New York City rental properties.

As part of a settlement agreement, Croman agreed to relinquish direct control of his 100+ rental buildings in New York City for five years.  A civil case brought by the AG’s office accused him of harassment, coercion and fraud to force rent-regulated tenants out of their apartments. Croman also served eight months in prison for mortgage and tax fraud before his release earlier this month.

According to Commercial Observer, NYC Management — a division of the Besen Group — will begin serving as property manager July 1. The attorney general’s office rejected two other companies proposed by Croman. The December 2017 consent decree indicated that Croman could only have, “incidental interaction with tenants of the subject properties” during the five year period.

In May, residents of two Lower East Side Croman buildings — 159 Stanton St. and 141 Ridge St. — held rallies to say conditions in their apartments had not gotten better during his incarceration. In fact, they said maintenance issues and neglect of the properties had gotten worse.
