Earlier this month, 20,000 runners came through the Lower East Side for the NYC Half Marathon. Another big race is headed for the neighborhood April 22, and this time the finish line is located at Pier 36.

The Nike GO NYC 5K takes off from Brooklyn on Earth Day. After the start at 7 p.m., about 5,000 runners will head over the Manhattan Bridge. They’ll turn on Canal Street, travel down Allen/Pike Street, before connecting with South Street. The run ends up at Basketball City/Pier 36, where there will be a private after party (8:30 p.m.).

Community Board 3 has been told there will be rolling closures on the route by the NYPD. On April 22, there will likely be no parking on Canal Street between the Manhattan Bridge and Pike Street and on Montgomery Street between South Street and Water Street. There’s a $50 entry fee for runners with proceeds going to local groups. P.S. 20 and the LES Girls Club are two recipients. More race details available here.

As you might recall, CB3 and some local activists weren’t very pleased about the lack of notice regarding the NYC Half Marathon. Once again, the board was not given early warning about the Nike race. The topic is on the agenda at CB3’s next transportation committee meeting on April 10.
