The luxury condo building at 250 Bowery is losing one arts institution but gaining another.
Crain’s reports that Howl Arts, Inc., the East Village non-profit, has purchased a commercial condo on the second floor of 250 Bowery for $9 million. The 6,500 square foot space will be used for the organization’s offices, and will include exhibition and event areas. Howl Arts is keeping its ground floor gallery at 6 East First St.
The International Center of Photography occupies the ground floor and basement on the condo building, but it will be moving its gallery and school to the Essex Crossing project next year.
The existing gallery, Howl Happening, celebrates the old bohemian spirit of the Lower East Side/East Village, while embracing new creative energy in the neighborhood. It was created, in part, to preserve the archive of artist Arturo Vega.
