Early Saturday morning, an apparent botched robbery at the Chinese Hispanic Grocery, a bodega at Broome and Eldridge streets, ended with a suspect attacking a retired cop. He ran off with the cop’s gun.

The incident happened at around 5 a.m. The ex-police officer was in the bodega when he became aware of what the Daily News called a “suspicious struggle,” starting on the sidewalk and then spilling inside. When the ex-cop identified himself, most of the men ran off. But one guy stayed behind, kicking and punching the former police officer.

“During the struggle,” reported the News, “the cop’s unloaded gun fell out of its holster. His attacker (police said) kicked it away, then snatched it and ran off.”  The man was later hospitalized and treated for cuts on his face.  The suspect is still on the loose.
