We have seen an unprecedented amount of hotel construction on the Lower East Side during the past few years, and several more projects are in the pipeline. The latest Hotel Development Report from NYC & Company shows just how much activity there’s been in a short period of time.
According to the report, there are nearly 114,000 hotel rooms in New York City, with 25,500 additional rooms on the way. There’s a listing of recently opened properties and hotels in the planning/construction phases. It’s not a comprehensive list, but most of the local projects we’ve heard about are included. Let’s take a look.
Hotels that opened in 2017 on the Lower East Side:
–The Public Hotel, 215 Chrystie St.; 370 rooms
–Hotel 50 Bowery; 229 rooms
–The Allen Hotel, 88 Allen St.; 45 rooms
Hotels that opened in 2015-2016:
–Sago Hotel, 120 Allen St.; 20 rooms
–Hotel Indigo, 171 Ludlow St.; 293 rooms
–Orchard Street Hotel, 163 Orchard St.; 53 rooms
–Ludlow Hotel, 180 Ludlow St., 184 rooms (actually opened in 2014)
Hotels in the pipeline:
–CitizenM Hotel, 185-191 Bowery; 315 rooms; 2018 opening planned
–Ace Hotel, 223-225 Bowery; 200 rooms; 2018 opening planned
–Unnamed hotel, 138-142 Bowery; 46 rooms; 2018 opening planned
–Unnamed hotel, 139 Orchard St., 105 rooms; 2018 opening planned
–Jarmulowsky Hotel, 9 Orchard St.; 97 rooms (not mentioned in report)
Taken together, there are nearly 2,000 new hotel rooms that have been added on the Lower East Side and in Chinatown during the past few years or that are in the planning/construction phases. Back in 2012, we reported on the neighborhood’s hotel construction boom. At that time, we counted 952 existing hotel rooms in the whole neighborhood.
