Dear neighbor:
We, Karen Blatt and Jacob Goldman, are your candidates for District Leaders on the Lower East Side.
We have an important race today, and we urge you to come out and vote for us. Some may ask, what is a District Leader and what do we do? More important, some might ask what is the fuss all about?
As District Leaders, we officially have a very small role in political and government leadership. However, we have a big impact in bridging our community to our local and state leadership on issues that are important to all of us. It is on the point of thoughtful advocacy where this race matters most.
The Grand Street neighborhood has changed a lot over the last couple of years. New opportunities for more diverse commercial and retail shopping areas were created and nurtured by new neighbors, renovations, and new developments. All of this “new” requires better coordination and better planning in terms of public transportation, trash cleanup, traffic patterns and schools. As District Leaders with experience dealing with our elected leaders and city agencies, we can effectively work to get our community the attention we need and deserve.
Our opponents have thrown out clichés and hollow statements to generate support and while their attacks sound catchy on paper, these sound bites and wag-the-dog tactics say nothing about their capabilities to bring our community together or to get the job done.
What we do is support the community; the whole community and everyone in it. We are broadminded residents who believe that every person deserves a voice, and that our diversity is our strength.
We are Americans who believe in religious freedoms and personal liberties. We support equal rights, equal pay, and access for all people. We openly support LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, and children’s rights. We support our public as well as our private schools and efforts to improve them. We believe in transparency and a seat at the table for everyone. We love and support our environment and will work hard to protect our planet.
