There’s more trouble this morning at 201 East Broadway, a construction site next door to the Educational Alliance/Manny Cantor Center.
Lower East Side District Leader Daisy Paez let us know that the sidewalk alongside the construction site has collapsed. The area has been blocked off. Pedestrians are walking into the street to pass by this stretch of East Broadway. A police car is on site.
Developer Daniel Wise is putting up an eight story residential building here. Back in June, construction was halted by the Department of Buildings after excavation caused structural stability issues with the foundation of a neighboring tenement.
We have contacted Wise and the Department of Buildings for more details about what happened today.
UPDATE 9:50 a.m. The Department of Buildings now has an inspector on site. The contractor is also on site, a spokesperson tells us.
UPDATE 5:01 p.m. The Buildings Department has imposed a stop work order on the property.
