The summer of 2017 isn’t over yet, but we’re already looking forward to the summer of 2018, when the city’s expanded ferry service will add a Lower East Side stop.
As DNAinfo first noted the other day, the Economic Development Corp. has filed its application with the Army Corps of Engineers for a ferry landing near Corlears Hook Park. The Grand Street stop is part of a route that will take locals down to Wall Street/Pier 11, or up the East River to Stuyvesant Town (20th Street), to East 34th Street and then across to Long Island City.
According to the application, the city plans to construct a 30-foot-wide by 90-foot long barge in the river. The dock will be able to accommodate up to three boats at any one time. There will be a 10-foot by 80-foot gangway leading commuters from the East River Esplanade to the dock.
All comments regarding the application (which includes six NYC locations) must be received by Sept. 3. You can read the full public notice here.
The NYC Ferry launched this past May, offering service to the Rockaways, Brooklyn Army Terminal and Bay Ridge, among other locations. More than one-million riders have used the service so far. The fare is $2.75 plus $1 extra if you bring a bike on board.
